Alice in Wonderland is one of those classics that everyone knows and yet few people actually have read. When you do read it, though, it turns out to be surprisingly well written and funny. Even if a number of the jokes no longer make sense from a modern perspective, there’s something timeless about the wordplay and absurd nonsense… that’s just slightly nightmarish.

For this collection, the task was to draw my interpretation of some of the most iconic characters from the book, but not Alice herself or the Queen of Hearts.

So here’s the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, the Dodo, the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle.

(If you’re wondering why I didn’t include Tweedlededee and Tweedlededum, it’s because they’re not actually in Alice in Wonderland. They, along with the Walrus, the Carpenter and the Jabberwock, are from the sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. Several adaptations, including the Disney animated movie, borrow characters and ideas from the sequel, leading to the common misconception that the Tweedles can be found in Wonderland. They can’t. )
