After making storyboards for the FunkSoft game project Dovreslubben og Raskeladden, I did character designs for the two main characters of the game.

The characters are modernized parodies of classic Norwegian folktale charcters.

Raskeladden is of course a descendant/parody of Askeladden (“the Ash Lad” or “Cinderlad”), the unlikely hero of many a Norwegian folktale, who got his nickname because he sould sit in the fireplace and dig in the ashes until the story began and he was called upon to prove himself cleverer and more heroic than his older, successful brothers. This version has swapped out ashes and fireplaces for sports and Skiking.

Dovreslubben, the villain (and by far the most popular character at FunkSoft) is a slowenly, lower-class answer to Dovregubben, or the Mountain King. The King of the Trolls is less kingly and more of a slob; he too likes sports and excercise but isn’t particularly good at it. Which is why he steals Raskeladden’s Skike collection, because he’s heard that Skikes are the “best form of excercise.”
